On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Harrar Coffee & Roastery aims to open in October, while M.E. Swing’s roastery hoping to begin brewing by Thanksgiving. The team behind Al Dente is opening another Italian venture. Fuel Pizza will open a third location next spring. Philly favorite John Shields (Town House) is reportedly eyeing the District for his next project; we’ll pass along details when we get them.

In Philadelphia, Eric Paraskevas (Slate) nabbed the executive chef position at The Bainbridge Street Barrel HouseAureole alumnus Christopher Lee is teaming up with Salt & Pepper’s owners for a new project. Cafe Estelle and the Santa Fe Burrito on 11th St. both closed.

In Boston, Steve’s Greek Cuisine reopened and The Baja Taco Truck rolled out. BoMa opens in the next couple of weeks, while Cinquecento is now looking at a mid-October debut. 51 Lincoln’s sister eatery Waban Kitchen will open in the next couple of months. Boston University is firing up an Asian fusion food truck this fall. Prana shuttered and will be replaced by Organic TableCharley’s closed.

Plate’s Chef Shuffles for the week of September 21

On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Head Chef Ben Gilligan is saying farewell to Room 11. The “Latin speakeasy” Boveda and a second Caucus Room opened in the Westin Hotel with menus from Chef Brian Wolken, and Bethesda Blues and Jazz Supper Club will open in the coming months with a menu from New Orleans native Moses JacksonPoboy Jim, the Cuban-accented Little Ricky’s, the “oyster and tapas” concept Catch 15Benny’s Bar and Grill, a new location of Aroma Espresso Bar, and a third location of Pho 14 will all open in the coming months. Yola is closing at the end of the month.

In Philadelphia, David Chang’s former collaborator Peter Serpico is now working with Stephen Starr on a new concept that will open this winter. The osteria and wine bar Catelli Duo debuted. Marc Vetri will open a location of Osteria at the Moorestown Mall. The Red Owl Tavern plans to open at the beginning of October with a menu from Guillermo Tellez (Square 1682). Rocco’s Sausage will open a new location shortly. ReserveCarman’s Country Kitchen and Tapestry all closed.

Plate’s Chef Shuffles for the week of September 14

On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Grilled Oyster Company and Epic Smokehouse both opened. Pleasant Pops Farmhouse Market and Café opens next week. Protein Bar will open a second location in spring 2013, and Coastal Flats will open an outpost in Gaithersburg in 2014. Uno Chicago GrillSangria CaféBistro Bistro in Shirlington, and Daily Deli all closed.

In Philadelphia, The Boilermaker is becoming The Butcher and The BrewerWatkins Drinkery alumna Jennifer Choplin will take over the kitchen. The original location of Lee’s Hoagie House has closed.

In Boston, El Triunfo closed its North End location.

Plate’s Chef Shuffles for the week of September 7

On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Kafe Bohem began brewing. Nick’s Riverside Grille and its sister restaurant Tony & Joe’s Seafood Place both reopened after severe flooding shut them down in the spring of 2011. Geoff Tracy‘s Chef Geoff is set to open a new Rockville location mid-month.

In Philadelphia, the Field House reopened with Opa alumnus Andrew Brown as executive chef. Pie shop Magpie and Baan Thai both opened. Michael Santoro’s The Mildred opens next week in the old James space.

In Boston, a fourth location of Uburger and DooWee & Rice both started service, while Cappy’s Pizza reopened after a fire. YumeWoKatare ramen joint opens later this month, The Thinking Cup starts percolating in October, Menotomy Grille and Asta debut in November, and the Vietnamese food truck Bon Mi will go brick-and-mortar by the end of the year.

Plate’s Chef Shuffles for the week of August 23

On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Slate Wine Bar, the first area location of Chicago-based Protein Bar, and new locations of Luke’s LobsterSweetgreen and Z Burger all opened. The tapas joint Costa Brava, the steakhouse Mythology, and the first area location of Sophie’s Cuban Cuisine are set to open in the coming months. La Forchettawill change its name to Al Dente in September.

In Baltimore, Krazi Kebab has opened a new location.

In Philadelphia, Jose Garces is consulting on Local, a new restaurant inside the Philadelphia International Airport. The food cart gathering space Garage is set to open at the beginning of November, while Ocean Prime will open next spring in the former Roy’s space.

In Boston, Wequassett Resort and Golf Club has named Remy Funfrock (Daniel) its new executive pastry chef. BBQ spot The Bearded Pig has shuttered.

On the East Coast

In Washington, D.C., Adam Goldman is the new executive chef at Masa 14. Pizzaiolo Anthony Pilla is leaving Seventh Hill Pizza for the forthcoming Ghibellina, a Tuscan gastropub. The New Orleans Po’ Boy Shop debuted, and Grilled Oyster Company opens later this month.

In Philadelphia, Mitch Prensky has left Lemon HillTorrisi Italian Specialties vet Eli Kulp is taking over the kitchen at ForkLittle Baby’s Ice Cream brick-and-mortar shop started scooping. Pumpkin alumnus Chris Kearse opens Will BYOB next week. Bucca Di BeppoSonata, and Zen-Nor all shuttered. Dolphin Tavern has closed, though the owners are hoping to raise funds so they can reopen.

In Boston, Patrizia’s Trattoria veteran Stephen Coe has been named the executive chef at BOKX 109 American Prime in the Hotel IndigoCafé BurritoLulu’s Sweet ShoppePunjabi Tadka, and steakhouse Bogie’s all opened. Otto PizzaFroYoWorld, and Osushi will debut soon. Trattoria Cinquecento opens in early September in the former Rocca space. The Paddock shut its doors for good.

Plate’s Chef Shuffles for the week of July 27

The Mediterranean bistro Courgette in the Dream New York hotel and the Mediterranean-minded Extra Place from Ciano vet Michael Han both opened. The restaurant and bar Swine opened with a menu from Café Cluny alumnus Phil ConlonMurray’s Cheese Bar, artisan popcorn store Pop Karma, and Brooklyn Point Café all opened. Mughlai chain Moti Mahal Delux opened its first stateside location with Bhatti Indian Grill’s Gaurav Anand overseeing the kitchen. Moroccan restaurant Zerza reopened in a new space after a four-month absence.

This fall, Gabe Thompson and Joe Campanale aim to open L’Apicio. In the same timeframe, El Toro Blanco from John McDonald (Lure Fishbar) and Josh Pickard (The Dutch) with food by Josh Capon (Lure Fishbar) is set to debut. The all-American Westville is planning a late fall roll-out for a new location in the old Prime 333 space. Michael White (Marea) is aiming to open the Italian-focused Ristorante Morini next spring.

The Southern-styled Gravy and LaFayette French Pastry both shuttered. Terrance Brennan’s Picholine will close for renovations after dinner service tomorrow.

Chef-Partner Cornelius Gallagher has parted ways with Dragonfly to once again work for the Bohlsen Restaurant Group; Sous Chef Scott Gery will be bumped up to fill the empty executive chef slot. The French-focused Chateau Cherbuliez from Consulting Chef Todd English opened, while Station started serving up French with South African and Thai influences. First-time restaurateurs Henry Stimler and Menachem Senderowicz opened Jezebel, an upscale kosher restaurant with a menu created by Culinary Director Bradford ThompsonSteve Cruz (Rayuela) is the new executive chef at The Orchard HouseCómodo, the all-organic Siggy’s Good Food, a new Everyman Espresso location, Frozen SocialCrave FishbarSullivan Street Bakery from Jim Lahey, and Macaron Café all opened.

Dani García aims to open a second outpost of his Manzanilla concept at the beginning of November in partnership with Yann de RochefortRed Farm will take over the Fatty Crab space later this year. Bouchon Bakery vet Wayne Surber aims to open a brick-and-mortar location of Lonestar Taco sometime later this year.

La Petite Maison has temporary shuttered until September while it gets a makeover and a new chef. Bistro LamazouFunini, and Saint’s Alp Teahouse all closed up shop.
